Becoming a first-time dad has changed the way I see almost everything.

Before my daughter was born, cycling was a major part of my life. I would ride hundreds of miles each week, spending long hours on the road, pushing myself physically and enjoying the freedom that came with every ride.

Since she arrived, all of that has been placed on pause.

At first, that may sound like a major sacrifice, but it has not felt like losing something. My time and attention have simply shifted toward something far more important. The miles will still be there when I am ready to return, but these early moments with my daughter are happening only once.

The moment she entered my life, I felt a mixture of joy, gratitude, excitement and responsibility. I knew life would be different, but I did not fully understand how quickly my priorities would change.

Suddenly, the smallest moments became meaningful. Holding her while she sleeps, watching her react to familiar voices and seeing her discover the world around her have become some of the best parts of my day.

The hours I once spent cycling are now often spent feeding her, comforting her, helping around the house or simply sitting nearby and watching her sleep. It is a completely different pace of life, but it is one that I am learning to appreciate.

Being a new dad also comes with uncertainty. There are moments when I wonder whether I am doing things correctly or whether I am prepared for everything fatherhood will bring. I am learning that being a good father does not mean having every answer. It means being present, patient, willing to learn and committed to doing what is best for my daughter.

Having a daughter has also made me think more deeply about the example I want to set. I want her to grow up knowing that she is loved, respected, protected and capable of achieving great things. I want my actions to show her the values I hope she will carry throughout her life.

Cycling taught me discipline, patience, endurance and the importance of continuing even when the road becomes difficult. Those lessons have not disappeared just because the bicycle is resting. In many ways, I believe they are helping to prepare me for the lifelong journey of being her father.

One day, I will return to longer rides. Maybe she will even grow up seeing cycling as part of our family’s life. For now, however, I am exactly where I need to be.

This is only the beginning of my journey as a dad. I know there will be challenges, mistakes, lessons and many memorable moments along the way. For now, I am grateful for the opportunity to watch her grow and to grow alongside her.

## Frequently asked questions

### How has becoming a father changed your daily life?

Becoming a father has completely changed how I use my time and how I set my priorities. My days now revolve more around caring for my daughter, supporting my family and being present for the small moments that I know will not last forever.

### Why did you put cycling on pause after your daughter was born?

Before my daughter was born, I would cycle hundreds of miles each week. Those rides required a lot of time, energy and planning. I decided to put cycling on pause so I could focus on my daughter and be fully present during the early stages of her life.

### Do you miss cycling?

I do miss the freedom, discipline and physical challenge that cycling gave me. However, I do not see the pause as giving something up permanently. The roads and the bicycle will still be there, but these early moments with my daughter will only happen once.

### Do you plan to start cycling again?

Yes, I expect to return to cycling when the timing is right and when I can balance it responsibly with fatherhood and family life. I may begin with shorter rides before gradually returning to longer distances.

### What has been the most surprising part of becoming a first-time dad?

The biggest surprise has been how quickly my priorities changed. Things that once seemed urgent now feel less important, while simple moments such as holding my daughter or watching her sleep have become incredibly meaningful.

### What has cycling taught you about fatherhood?

Cycling taught me patience, discipline, consistency and endurance. Those same qualities are valuable in fatherhood, especially during the difficult or tiring moments when being calm, dependable and present matters most.

### What advice would you give another first-time dad?

You do not need to have every answer. Be present, support your partner, remain willing to learn and give yourself time to adjust. Fatherhood is a new journey and it is okay to learn as you go.

### Is it difficult to balance personal interests with being a parent?

It can be difficult, especially during the early stages when the baby requires a great deal of attention. I am learning that balance does not always mean doing everything at the same level as before. Sometimes it means pausing one interest temporarily and returning to it later in a healthier and more manageable way.

### How has having a daughter affected the example you want to set?

Having a daughter has made me think more carefully about the person I want to be. I want her to see kindness, discipline, respect, responsibility and perseverance in the way I live, not only in the advice I give her.

### What does being a “girl dad” mean to you?

Being a girl dad means being committed to loving, protecting, encouraging and supporting my daughter while helping her grow into a confident and capable person. It also means continuing to grow and become a better version of myself for her.
